I was born in London and studied art from the age of 13 , first at junior art school at Sutton East in South London and then at Croydon College of Art where I studied graphic design. After graduating in 1967 I worked as a graphic designer for various design groups and agencies until in 1970 I became a founding partner of my my own design company. TWD was based in Covent Garden, London, where my team and I designed work for many blue- chip clients. Five years later and on the back of great success I resigned to pursue my love of painting and drawing. I supported myself for a time with freelance design work and teaching and in 1979 I published my first illustrated book Pile: Petals From St Klaed’s Computer. In 1982 I published The Weather Works and then, in 1986, my life changed forever when I published my first best-seller, the classic puzzle book The Ultimate Alphabet. Later, I published The Annotated Ultimate Alphabet and then The Ultimate Noah’s Ark, which became another best-seller. In 1990 I was the subject of an award-winning arts documentary, Mike Wilks - Making His Mark, for BBC Television and I published The BBC Drawing Course to accompany this. The Ultimate Spot-The-Difference Book was published in 1997 and in the same year I had a retrospective exhibition of my paintings and drawings at the Gekoski Gallery in London. I spent a decade living in the South of France in an ancient stone mas with views over the Mediterranean but returned to London in 1998 where I bought an old pub and converted it into a vast, light-filled studio. Shortly afterwards, and always one for a new challenge, I began writing and in 2005 published my first novel, Mirrorscape, followed by the sequels Mirrorstorm and Mirrorshade known collectively as The Mirrorscape Trilogy. Today my paintings and drawings can be found in public and private collections in Europe and the USA and I continue to work hard creating new paintings and drawings in my studio- pub. This web site contains a selection of my past and more recent output for you to view. I hope you enjoy looking at my images and reading my words as much as I enjoyed making them. Thanks for your time. Let me know your thoughts if you feel so inclined.
